Viscosupplementation-Synvisc Injections

Viscosupplementation-Synvisc injections can provide significant pain relief from osteoarthritis of the knee for patients who have not had benefit from lifestyle modifications or relief with simple over-the-counter analgesics.

Knee pain may be caused by a variety of things, but one of the more common causes of chronic knee pain is osteoarthritis. This is a degenerative condition in which the cartilage, or cushion, between the bones that make up your knee is worn away. Viscosupplementation attempts to recreate the cushion and fluid in your knee that is lost. Synvisc is a gel-like material made from hyaluronan that comes from chicken combs.

How It Works

The injection will take place either via palpation of bony landmarks or under live x-ray to confirm placement of the medication.

  • Your physician will have you laying or in a seated position whichever is more comfortable for you.
  • The area will be cleaned with an antiseptic solution, and then local anesthetic will be injected to numb your skin.
  • Following this, a needle will be used to enter the knee joint and inject the medication.
  • The needle will be removed, and a sterile dressing applied.

Risks

Although extremely rare, risks may include bleeding; infection; allergic reaction to the medication; damage to tendons, muscles and joints; and prolonged increase in pain. Your experienced pain management provider at the JLR Center for Pain Medicine will take all the necessary precautions to try to prevent these complications.
