New COOLIEF* Cooled Radiofrequency Treatment Offers Relief for Osteoarthritis Patients with Chronic Hip and Knee Pain

Learn more about COOLIEF*Chronic hip and knee pain from osteoarthritis can be unbearable, persistent and also difficult to treat. That is why the Center for Pain Medicine is pleased to announce the availability of COOLIEF* cooled radiofrequency, a safe and effective, minimally invasive, outpatient treatment option.

Many chronic hip and knee pain patients have tried multiple remedies to ease their symptoms, including anti-inflammatory drugs, physical therapy, injections, surgery and narcotics. However, some patients may not respond well to these treatments or may not be candidates for surgery due to obesity, age or other significant health conditions. Others simply wish to discuss alternatives to surgery. COOLIEF* is a new treatment that delivers long-lasting pain relief for many of these patients and helps them to get back to enjoying their everyday lives.

What is COOLIEF*?

COOLIEF* is designed to treat chronic pain lasting for longer than three months. The procedure uses cooled radiofrequency energy to safely target the sensory nerves causing pain from osteoarthritis of the hip and knee joint.

Radiofrequency ablation has been used in the medical field for over 20 years in various applications, including in pain medicine for treatment of chronic neck and back pain. Traditionally, the procedure is performed using live x-ray guidance (fluoroscopy) to help safely find the course of nerves generating the pain. While multiple medical studies have supported the benefits of radio frequency ablation for hip and knee pain as well, the variability in the course of nerve branches that provide sensation to these two parts of the body causes them to be easily missed despite the x-ray guidance.

COOLIEF* cooled radiofrequency treatment is different from traditional cooled radio frequency in that the unique machine circulates water through the tip of the radiofrequency needle while heating nervous tissue to create a treatment area that is larger than conventional radiofrequency treatments. This combination targets the pain-causing nerves without excessive heating and with increased reliability in targeting the nerves, leading to greater and sustained pain relief. Benefits include:

  • Up to 24 months of pain relief
  • No loss of joint function
  • Improved mobility
  • Potentially decreased consumption of pain medications
  • Less recovery time
  • Faster clinical results
